Mountain and sea!
THE SQUARE...
Lafkos central square is one of the most beautiful and biggest squares of Pelion. Renowned for its old and grandiose plane trees that shade over the tables of the restaurants operating around the square.
Stone fountains and the impressive main church of the village are its natural decoration. Only pathways give on the square as Lafkos is car free. Vehicles are only allowed peripherally. Imagine the great pleasure of tasting local cuisine under the shade of century old trees, with peace of mind and no noise of cars passing by while children play in absolute safety.
THE FOOD....
There are two restaurants on Lafkos square, all offering nicely cooked dishes. Friendly, with their owners ready to serve you and offer you Pelion ... on your plate! Do not leave without tasting "spetzofai" (sausage with peppers), chickpeas, "boubari" (finely chopped viscera with rice), greens cooked with tomato and eggs, galottiri (feta cheese in yoghurt cream) and handmade pies. For desert try the traditional apple and chestnut compote or the unbeatable baklava.
The more demanding visitors of Lafkos will taste modern Greek Gastronomy in the cafe next to the Svala district, serving original salty and sweet pancakes, delicious orange and walnut pies, as well as excellent quality coffee and drinks.
THE SKEWER...
The energetic owner of the restaurant grill has not only to offer you the famous Greek "souvlaki". While you wait for your food to be prepared, you will be impressed by the unique collection of culinary aprons that adorn the place. More than 80 aprons from all over the world are included in her collection and what she dreams of is a place in the Guinness Book!
You will find it on the way to the Svalla district, a few meters from the square.
THE BAKERY...
You will discover the traditional bakery of Ioannis Drositis from the first moment of your stay in Lafkos. The tempting smell of fresh bread will lead you there, as this is probably the last oven of Pelion with a "rifle" (a hole from where the fire comes out to heat the oven inside).
Cheese bread, olive bread or even baklava, are some of the delicacies you will find there and many more, depending on the daily inspiration of our always smiling baker, Mr. Yannis!
THE OLDEST CAFE....
Even if you do not like "Greek coffee", you should sit and have a traditional one at the café of Foldidas family. Seven generations of this family keep this café since 1785, making it the oldest Greek "kafeneion". Mr Manolis will welcome you there! Within it famous Greek intellectuals, like Papadiamantis, Varnalis and Delmouzos, have enjoyed their coffee and wine. Its history goes long ago, but this stone-built two-storey mansion in Lafkos Square, still manages to stand there, glorious and Greek.
THE RADIOS....
In this small village of South Pelion, no one expects to find a Radio Museum! In fact it is the one of the two Radio Museums in Greece.
At the "Antonis Tavanis" Museum, the visitor will have the chance to see about 130 radio posts, most of them donated by Wilfriend Shoeps, a university professor of German origin having given his soul to the village of Lafkos.
The Association of Magnisia Lafkiotans "Action" in collaboration with the inhabitants of Lafkos and especially thanks to the volunteer Stathis Sfondilias, who acts as a "guide", all of them do their best to preserve the place.
THE MUSEUMS...
Lafkos is a place of artists. Various cultural events take place mainly from spring to autumn. At the central square the old primary school building is nowadays Fabas Museum, full of paintings and sculptures of the artist Thanasis Fabas.
Lafkos Folkloric Museum will take you back to earlier times of Greek Tradition and Life in the Greek countryside.
THE SOUVENIRS...
Do not leave Lafkos without carrying some Pelion taste in your suitcase!
In the small village market you will find handmade jewelry and art crafts but also small glass jars containing the secrets of the land of Pelion: honey, jams, herbs and tasty compotes.
